I was so excited when I first tuned into an audio-recording of On Canaan's Side. The reader had a great Irish accent and didn't do American accents too badly at all..some of the writing is absolutely beautiful...
But I confess I found the tale a tad too long and bordering on - dare I say it - pap or sentimentalism or unnecessary storytelling.....there was a time when I thought - "Oh God - the narrator is 89 years old....how much further do we have to go - Martin Luther King's assassination, Kennedy's assassination, etc etc."
Call me heartless but I'm afraid I liked the front end of the book more than the back end.
