I'm yet to get to any of the other shortlisted novels from 1971 so may find a gem in there that was a lot more worthy of the prize. Thanks for your feedback, most appreciated.Messy_Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05793938555354522246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1167986121420161934.post-70960009665297806142011-12-27T21:05:51.405-05:002011-12-27T21:05:51.405-05:00I'm not sure if I'm convinced of your asse...I'm not sure if I'm convinced of your assertion that this is a "masterful" work. Masterful in what way? That it includes the typically Booker-ish themes of imperialism, postcolonialism and diaspora? Regardless of the inclusion of the Booker's pet themes, the novel is exceedingly boring and holds the reader at arm's length except when alluding with neon signs to its themes. Normally, I'm quite on board with your reviews. There's no way I would ever use the word "master" in reference to In a Free State. Just like with Kingsley Amis' head-scratching win, the award was given to the author and not to the specific work.matthew.https://www.blogger.com/profile/17785443003038077519noreply@blogger.com
